Successful Growers means Secure Local Food and Satisfied Consumers
Nothing says Spring like fresh food! More and more people are choosing fresh fruits and vegetables and locally grown meats. We are seeing the return of the nearly long gone family farms who supplied local meats, dairy, honey, fresh fruit and vegetables and its to everyone's delight. Food grown in rich nurtured soil right here at our local farms are picked right at the moment of freshness and peak flavor!
How long since you tasted the fresh slightly acid - sweet flavor of a real vine-ripened tomato on a BLT, or a real deep meaty red tomato was the center piece of a summer meal with a dash of salt or dab of mayo? Can you taste it? The art of growing a perfect fruit or vegetable takes years to learn and develop. And that's what you get when you buy local fresh food.
Strawberries picked when they beg to be picked are so intensely flavored that every taste bud in your mouth waters and comes alive. That perfect strawberry is a joyful delight only when the farmer has dedicated years of building the soil to what that strawberry wants and needs. And then the skill of the farmer tells them when its time to pick - and ONLY at that time should it be picked. Only when fruit and vegatables are at their peak do they hold most nutrients as well as flavor.
How about if your kids preffered a crunchy sweet carrot instead of bag of store-bought munchies? A perfectly grown carrot has a light crisp, thirst-quenching characteristic with a pop of natural sweetness at the end of chewing it. It tends to hold that sweetness for a finaly of its concerted experience. A good carrot feeds the senses, the soul and feeds the body. It takes just the right kind of carrot, in just the right mix of soil to achieve this wonder of nature and these carrots can be found more likely in home gardens than in a grocer's shelf. They are generally not sold because they are covetted by those who grow them and are highly sought out. Such a carrot is only good for a short period of time as in stored they loose that crunch ability and are sent to coleslaw, salads and other uses.
Fresh picked ripe food is not only a culinary delight - its also when the fruit or vegetable is most nutritous so it is naturally more filling. Your senses are filled and you eat less because ALL your senses have been heightened by this nutrient density. Its one reason why you see gardeners slightly under weight (the other is they will work very hard to coax this treasure from the earth).
There are many reasons to choose fresh locally grown foods, like-Local foods are not loaded with preservatives or artificial colors because they are the real McCoy and nothing less. Or, maybe you are tired of the pink slime.
Whether you are a regular to the local markets or new, you will find many resources at the market to help you achieve the culinary delights you are seeking. Gardeners too can gain knowledge from the local growers. Demonstrations for improving soil (because it all begins with good soil) will be held May 5th at Super Fresh starting in the morning. Feel free to ask questions on soil improvements to get that delicious tomato, crispy sweet carrot or mouth watering strawberry.
